  Hello all,

My name is Mary Hoyle I am a School Nurse Teacher at Founders Academy and Beacon Charter High School in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.  I am in the School Nurse Teacher certificate program.  I enjoying spending time with my cat Samuel and parakeet Junior:  I also enjoy with the young children at my church.

After reading this article I couldn't help of thinking of my own journey in life.  I was always picked on as a teenage by my own classmates.  My freckles were my down fall, my classmates looked at my outward appearance and not inwardly. I cried many days when coming home from school.  Each dat they would tease me from the beginning of school until the end of the day. They would take a pen make a round circle on their hand and say we won't catch her spots,than they would just laugh.  When you get older this truly affects you your whole life, no self confidence and low set esteem.  I can emphasize with my students when they struggle on who they are,or what they should do. Some of my students come and share their stories with me. One student who was born a girl shared that from the time she was young she felt like a boy.  Assignment B “COLORBLINDNESS IS THE NEW RASCISM’’ All Live Matter  As I sat at my desk to read this article for the second time I had an ah ha moment, it clicked in. This article is related to what I read in Allen Johnson’s Privilege, Power and Difference”. My friend and colleague appear at my door and I shared what I just learned.  I felt this article was about tolerance and diversity. I do like what was said on page 63 “white privilege includes the assumption that white people define a societal norm and that people of color are “other”, often considered inferior or dangerous. Because Whites represent the societal “normal” benchmark the White person has an everyday option not to think of herself in racial terms at all.” I worked with a lot of people of many different races at one job even thou they are different and had other small differences.  The American Life, The Problem We All Live With ((part 1)      In the beginning, I read the article and made numerous notes on the context. Wanting to have a clearly picture, of the entire article I listened to the audio version.  Nikole Hannah-Jones is an educator reporter, she discussed school integration in length concerning the state of Missouri.  After reading I am sure why attention was brought to the Normandy school district was because of the Michael Brown’s shooting.  Michael Brown was a graduate of the Normandy school district and was shot shortly after his graduation.    For 15 years the Normandy school district did not meet the state standards and has lost it accreditation in the year 2013.As school educators, we should advocate for our students and their families in our community.  The school system knows that we always need to look at better policies, have better funding in our areas.  Integration can also h...
